Color correction is a process that is used to adjust and enhance the color of a video or an image. In Adobe After Effects, color correction can be used to correct color imbalances or to change the overall color of a shot. Some common techniques used in color correction include adjusting the brightness, contrast, and saturation of the footage, as well as adjusting the white balance to match the lighting conditions of the shot. Color correction can also be used to match the color of multiple shots that were shot under different lighting conditions, or to create a specific look or mood for the video.
So, where do you start with color correction in After Effects? First, you’ll want to open up your composition and select the layer that you want to work on. From there, you can navigate to the “Effects & Presets” tab in the top menu, and under the “Color Correction” submenu, you’ll find a variety of tools to choose from, see screenshot on the right.
Yes! there is a lot of color correction effects and presets in After Effects I will go over the effects I use the most as a motion graphic designer, then you can dig on the other color correction presets on your own time.
Here are the 6 Color Correction effects any motion designer should know about
LEVEL
One of the most basic and essential color correction tools is the “Levels” effect. This allows you to adjust the overall contrast and brightness of your footage by setting the black, white, and midpoint levels.

CURVES
You can also use the “Curves” effect to make more precise adjustments to the tonal range of your footage.
HUE/SATURATION
Another useful color correction tool is the “Hue/Saturation” effect, which allows you to adjust the hue, saturation, and luminance of specific colors in your footage. This can be especially helpful if you have a shot that looks a bit off, but you’re not quite sure why. You can use the hue and saturation sliders to fine-tune the colors until they look just right.
One thing to keep in mind when color correcting is that less is often more. It’s easy to get carried away and start tweaking every little thing, but sometimes a subtle touch can go a long way. It’s always a good idea to reference back to your original footage to see how your changes are impacting the overall look of the shot.
COLOR BALANCE
One of the simplest ways to color correct your footage in After Effects is to use the “Color Balance” effect. This effect allows you to adjust the shadows, midtones, and highlights of your footage separately, which can be helpful if certain parts of your image are too dark or too bright.
BRIGHTNESS & CONTRAST
In Adobe After Effects, the Brightness & Contrast effect is used to adjust the brightness and contrast of a layer or footage. The Brightness & Contrast effect has two sliders: Brightness and Contrast.
The Brightness slider allows you to adjust the overall luminance of the layer or footage. Moving the slider to the right increases the brightness, and moving it to the left decreases the brightness.
The Contrast slider allows you to adjust the difference between the darkest and lightest areas of the layer or footage. Increasing the contrast makes the darker areas darker and the lighter areas lighter, while decreasing the contrast has the opposite effect.
TINT
The Tint effect in Adobe After Effects allows you to apply a color wash over an image or video layer. It works by adjusting the hue, saturation, and luminance values of the image or video, resulting in a colorized version of the original content. You can choose the color that you want to use for the tint effect and adjust the intensity of the effect using the sliders in the effect controls panel. The Tint effect can be used to give your footage a stylized look or to correct the color balance of an image or video.
